Bio

Daughter of Jacob Courtney and Sarah Jane Shed, she was born on the Shed ranch in Shelby county but moved to Titus to another ranch when she was still a toddler. Her widowed father brought the family back to Shelby where his mother, Charity Sessums had a home. Janie met a Georgia arrival, David Fowler there and the two had four children before both had an early death. Their orphaned children lived with Janie's father in Rains County. Janie's father raised his grandchildren, Claude, Vera, Bernice and Ollie Fowler. After his death, the children were sent to other relatives. Ollie lived with the Belcher family, in-laws of her uncle John Charles Courtney. (Siblings not linked: Mary Elizabeth born 1868, William Hardy born 1869)
