From the St. Paul Republican, July 6, 1905, page 5, transcribed by Linda Berney: Death of an Old Settler - Mrs. Anna Gruber died at the home of her son, Andrew Gruber, Wednesday morning, July 5, at 9 o'clock, aged 77 years. She had been in feeble health for several years, but her condition did not become serious until last Sunday when she was attacked by pneumonia. She was the widow of Joseph Gruber, who died ten years ago, and the mother of Andrew, Frank and William Gruber. The last named son arrived from Ord on the excursion train Tuesday night in time for her to recognize him before she died. Mrs. Gruber was born in Gutenberg, Bohemia, and was married at the same place in 1852. She removed with her family to America in 1870, settling in Oswego, N. Y. and came to Howard county in 1878, where she has since resided. She was a sister of James Toman, who died about twelve years ago. Her oldest son, Joseph Gruber, is also buried here. The funeral will be held at St. Peter and Paul's church, of which she was a devout member, Friday at 10 o'clock, Rev. Joseph Nemec of Geranium conducting the services on account of the absence of the resident priest, Rev. Macourek, who is sick in Omaha.
