Bio
Anton grew up on the family farm in Gregory county, SD. He married Mavis (Becker) Cressman on 1 Jun 1949 and became a father to her two year old daughter Margaret. Four sons were born to Tony and Mavis, Andrew, Rudolph, Jeffrey and Steven. They made their home on the Hambek family farm until 1965 when they sold the farm and moved to the Becker farm 8 miles south of Herrick. They lived there until the fall of 2008 when they moved to Gregory. He entered the Rosebud Country Care Center on January 26, 2011 where he lived until his death. In his younger days Tony was active as a school board member and in farm organizations. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge for 64 years. Tony enjoyed being a farmer and was never more happy than when he was churning out little square bales with his New Holland baler. The dirty thirties taught him to be a lifelong saver and recycler long before the term was coined. Through his years as a farmer he did much of his own mechanic work. He saw huge changes in farming. From farming with horses, picking corn by hand, shocking grain and threshing to the mechanized farming of today. He valued the land and followed conservation practices. Trees were very important to him and he planted and tended many windbreaks. Tony retired at the age of 70 and he and Mavis began spending their winters in Harlingen, Texas. Nineteen winters were spent enjoying the pleasant weather, park activities and new friends. Tony learned to play the concertina at a young age and spent many happy hours playing the Czech music he loved. He met Mavis at a dance in Herrick and they danced their way through married life until ill health intervened. (Information from Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home, Gregory SD online obituary)
