Bio

Josephine Gooden Hayes was born to William Gooden and Evaline Hankins in North Carolina and her parents died in Calhoun County, Ala in 1880. Josephine had several children, William, George, Samuel, and Sarah who married John Cox. Josephine died from the result of a broken hip and took sick at her daughter's house in GA on Lookout Mt and died, strange as it may seem john Wesley Gooden was at the foot of the mountain in Chattanooga working for the railroad and this was his aunt but did not realize it was her, this was told to me from John Wesley's grandson Tim Gooden. John Wesley Gooden was the first child of Catherine Gooden, and Benjamin Hawkins she was not married at this time but later married Benjamin and had 3 more children. 1900 census states she had 4 living children when Catherine died her stepson was an informant for her death cert and listed John Wesley as her father. Her mind had become a fog at this time. In 1940 Catherine had a daughter who died and Easter Hughes Gooden demanded that John Wesley being the obit as a brother which caused a family problem,,(I have the obit) ...john Wesley was raised by his grandparents until they died and came back from Alabama and my grandfather took him in and got him a job on the railroad and people then thought he was Scott Gooden son(my ggrandfather) even to this day John Wesley's family still are not sure ,but to the Hawkins family there is not a problem (Wiliam Gooden and Evaline Hankins Gooden family know and everyone in Hamilton co TN knew, John Wesley was born in Ooltewah TN. Note old folk rattlers sure can cause a lot of grief for many years. By Carl Gooden
