James Anton Coufal James Anton Coufal, 91, of Colon died Tuesday, August 22, 1995 at the Saunders County Community Hospital in Wahoo. Mr. Coufal, the fifth of nine children of Anton and Josephine Spatz Coufal was born March 10, 1904 on the family farm near Abie. Jim, as he was known to most people attended elementary school in Abie in addition to helping with chores around the farm. On October 18, 1926 Jim married Wilma E. Vovtava in David City and during the early years of their marriage they lived on the homeplace near Abie. Later, the family moved to another in the Abie area, and in addition to raising crops and livestock Jim also ran the road patrol in the precinct on a part-time basis. Two children were born during this time. The family moved to the rural Colon area in February of 1938 and Jim continued to farm until moving into Colon in 1948. Once in town, Jim began working at the Farmers Union Co-op Elevator and was the assistant manager at the time of his retirement. Jim maintained a very active lifestyle and worked part-time for many area farmers during the spring and fall times. Jim served his community by being a member of the Town Board for 44 years from 1948 to 1992 and also was a member of the Colon Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years from 1948 to 1973. Survivors include a daughter, Arlene Peterson of Colon, son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Alyce Coufal of rural Wahoo, brother, Ernest Coufal of Denver, Colo; three sisters, Gustie Chvatal of Colon, Olga Tomek of Schuyler and Ella Koudele of Tekamah, brother-in-law, Louis Musilek of Omaha, and five grandchildren.
