Hajek was born April 6, 1908, in rural Leigh, Nebraska, to Louis L. and Anna (Littleman) Loseke. She was one of nine children. Irene was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh. As a young woman she worked as a housekeeper and met Edward L. Hajek from Clarkson, Nebraska. The couple were married on June 3, 1930. During their married life they lived in Leigh, San Diego, California, and on a farm near Kansas City, Kansas. When Ed passed away in 1953 in Desoto, Kansas, Irene and her two young children returned to Nebraska and lived north of Columbus and later in Columbus. She worked as a motel housekeeper and, for many years, at Becton-Dickinson. During this time, she was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Shell Creek, where she was a member of Ladies Aid and served on several committees. Her deep faith grew stronger with every passing year. Irene had a delightful sense of humor that gave great joy to all her many friends and loving family. Many of her “Irene witticisms” are remembered at family gatherings. Her wonderful “keep going” attitude helped her through many trying times in her life, and was an inspiration to all who met her. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus.
