Don ‘Red’ Ballard, 79, formerly of Giltner, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2015, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Giltner Cemetery. The Rev. Mary Scott will officiate. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of arrangements. Donald ‘Red’ Ballard was born Oct. 8, 1935, in Lincoln, the son of George and Lois (Brewer) Ballard. Red graduated from Burwell High School. Red was honorable discharged from the U.S. Army after serving from May 1959 to May 1962. Red was united in marriage to Loretta Fay Juett on Jan. 9, 1960, at Grand Island. There were five children born to this union: Theresa, Rodney, Kenneth, Barbara and Thomas. They moved to Giltner in 1970, where they raised their family. Red was a salesman and over-the-road truck driver for most of his life. Loretta passed away on July 14, 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta; a son, Rodney Ballard; and a daughter, Theresa Ray. Those who remain to cherish his memory are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Sandra Ballard of Giltner and Thomas Ballard of Aurora; a daughter, Barbara Ballard of Aurora; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Jessica and Michael Parker of Omaha, Kenya Skeen of Grand Island, Kaley Ballard and Ethan Ballard of Aurora, Natasha Ray and her husband, Nathan Kolbet of Hastings, Curtis Ray of Omaha and Andrea Ray of Grand Island and eight great-grandchildren, Hayden, Lily and Ava Parker, Spencer Skeen, Gabriel and Lilyauna Kolbet and Jayleigh and Ashlyn Berney.
