He was born in Rudolfstadt, Bohmen, (Czech Rudolfov), which is now in the Southern Bohemia area of the Czech Republic but at the time of his birth was crown territory of the Habsburg Austrian empire. He arrived in America Mar 23, 1874, at New York, New York, aboard the ship America. (Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1820-1897.) The 1900 census reports that he arrived in 1873 and wife Mary in 1874, but there may have been some uncertainty 26 years later. In 1900, Mathias, wife Mary, and their 8 children were living in the Manda community of eastern Travis County, Texas, about 7 miles northwest of Elgin. There were 3 sons and 5 daughters: son Mathias, born May 1884; daughter Mary, born December 1885; daughter Annie; born July 1887; daughter Josie, born January 1889; daughter Julia, born June 1891; son "Raimund", born 1893; son Rudolph, born 1895; and daughter Emma, born February 1898. All of the children were reported to have been born in Travis County, Texas. Mathias and Mary had been married for 17 years at the time of the 1900 census, June 18-20, 1900. Mathias was reported as a farmer at the time.
