Son of Francis Everett Amsberry of Mason County, West Virginia and Lucy Caroline Beard of Lynchburg, Bedford County, Virginia. Husband of Lela Ann Harbert of Southside, Mason County, West Virginia; married on 20 March 1889 in Nebraska. James was a school teacher and was also in the newspaper business in Mason City, Custer County, Nebraska. He and his family moved to LeGrand, Oregon about 1915.
