WESTFIELD, Iowa | Eugene Paul Shultz, 59, of Westfield died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, after suffering a massive heart attack. An informal gathering of family and friends will be noon Wednesday at St. Peter's Community Center, 400 Main St., Jefferson, S.D. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Online condolences may be posted at meyerbroschapels.com. Gene managed his business, Set in Steele Engraving. He served as Veteran's Affairs administrator at the Plymouth County (Iowa) Court House. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, and was honorably discharged in 1976. Earlier in his life, Gene served as a certified welder, and was employed at IPS/Midwest Power before he started his own business S & S Welding. Later he worked for KD Nutra Flo. After staff reductions, he turned his hobby into a profitable business, Set in Steele Engraving, engraving Western pieces for customers throughout the United States. Gene spent his life, much like his engraving, with Christ carving his character and smoothing rough edges anew each day. He enjoyed old movies, especially with The Duke, and long talks on his porch with friends and family. Gene was an inspiration to his grandkids, especially inspiring them to draw like their papa. He took his time to be there for every facet of his grandkids' lives -- cheer meetings, Christmas programs and rides home. Survivors include his wife, Dianna of Westfield; three children, Chandee (Rodd) Slater of McCook Lake, S.D., and their sons Cash and Atticus, Wade (Desiree) Shultz of Westfield and their children Maciah, Ziva, Boden and Gili, and Cecily (Rod) Ketchens of Sioux City and their daughter Simone; a brother-in-law, Tom Young of Peoria, Ariz.; and his parents, Merle and Rose Shultz of Onawa, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia 'Patty' Bumsted-Young, and a brother-in-law Richard Bumsted.
