Bio

The Rev. William Riley Smith, one of Pulaski county's oldest and best loved citizens, died Thursday at his home on the Mt. Vernon Road, after an illness of ten days. He was born near Jellico, Tenn., April 9, 1851, and came to this county from Williamsburg 45 years ago. He was converted at an early age and united with the Corinth Baptist Church at Spruceburg, Whitley County, Ky. He entered the ministry at the age of 18, being ordained by the Corinth Baptist Church of which he was a member. He faithfully served in the ministry until forced to retire 12 years ago on account of his advanced age. From the date of his conversion, 73 years ago, he lived a consistent Christian life, was a model husband and father in the home, a beloved citizen among all who knew him, and an humble follower daily of his Lord and Master. Countless numbers were converted under his preaching. There was a glow of gentleness always radiant in his character, and inward peace shining serenely on his countenance. Mr. Smith and Miss Catharine Brummett of Dishman, were married Jan. 28, 1869, and to this union were born ten children, five sons and five daughters. The eight surviving children are the Rev. Thomas M. Smith of Muskogee, Okla., Mrs. Rachel Early of Mark, Mrs. Tom Whitis of Dabney, Mrs. W.G. Boyd of Somerset, Jeremiah Smith of Stab, Mrs. T.A. Hail of San Diego, Cal., Mrs. Henry Wright of Ano and Bradley Smith of Somerset. Two sons, Josiah and George, preceded him in death. His wife passed to her reward Oct. 4, 1935. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Calvary Baptist Church, the Rev. G.S. Rogers and Rev. W.W. McAlpin officiating. Burial was in the Rock Lick Cemetery. Truly, a man of God has departed to receive the welcome plaudit, "Well done, good and faithful servant." From The Commonwealth, Somerset, Kentucky - Wednesday, June 24, 1942. ====== Links to parents provided by Find a Grave contributor, April (#47143148) on December 13, 2016.
