Bio

FamilySearch ID: LH7N-N2C The son of Henry and Solomea Sarah (Pfeiffer) Young of Maury Co, Tennessee James volunteered for the Spy Corp in the War of 1812. He enlisted at Ten Islands, Tennessee, 24 Sep 1813, serving in Capt. John Gordon's Company, Mounted Spies, Tennessee Militia, under the command of General Andrew Jackson. After serving primarily in Florida, James Young was honorably discharged at Huntsville, Alabama, 10 May 1814. On 23 Apr 1855, Rev. Young received 80 acres of land as bounty for services rendered in the War of 1812. In an article appearing in The Dallas News, James's son, Henry Fletcher Young, wrote that he came to Texas at the age of 13. Henry was born in 1833, making the year, 1846. U S Census data indicates that the James L Young family migrated to Texas from Montgomery Co, Illinois by way of Arkansas. The Young family appeared in the Hopkins Co, Texas 1850 census.
