Mr. Widhelm left Germany in 1872 and came to America, locating in Wisconsin. In the fall of the same year he moved to Platte county and homesteaded near the town of Humphrey. Here he remained until 1899 when he moved to Pierce county and purchased the Henry Yost farm, northeast of Pierce. While living here his wife passed away on November 20th, 1900, and the next year he moved to Foster and farmed for a couple of years. In 1903 he moved to Pierce and made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Florian Fuchs, up to the time of his death. The deceased was a veteran of the wars with Denmark and Prussia, in 1864 and 1866 respectively, serving 12 years in the German army. After a lingering illness extending over four years, Leonard Widhelm died Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Florian Fuchs, three miles southwest of Pierce; aged 68 years, 4 months and 2 days. The cause of his death resulted from a fall he received four years ago and from which he never recovered. Funeral services were held from the Catholic church in Pierce Monday forenoon at 10 o'clock by Rev. Fr. Mester, after which the remains followed by a large circle of sympathizing friends and old neighbors, were conveyed to the new Catholic cemetery, two and half miles southwest of the city, and laid to rest. Leonard Widhelm was born in Ulrichs, Niederostereich, Germany, on November 6, 1838. At the age of 29 years, or on August 20, 1867, he was married in Germany to Miss Annie Pfeifer, and in 1872 he came to America, settling in Wisconsin in April. Not being favorably impressed with that country, in the fall of this same year he came to Nebraska and located in Platte county. In 1882 he took up a homestead a short distance north of Humphrey and lived there until the spring of 1899, when they moved to Pierce county, settling northeast of Pierce. It was only a year after he moved here, that the death angel enter that peaceful and happy home and took from that noblest of human beings that one who had for many long years been with him in his adversity and prosperity - his wife and his children's mother. They endearly laid her away in the Catholic cemetery west of town. Seven children, five of whom are living were born to Mr. and Mrs. Widhelm. The living Mrs. Florian Fuchs, Mike and John of Pierce, Mrs. Ambros Ableidinger of Perry, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Joe Lehnerz of [O?], Kansas. He also leaves to survive him an aged father, 94 years of age, who still lives in Germany and who is enjoying good health. Before coming to America, the deceased had served his country faithfully and well in three wars, a remarkable thing, and when his enlistment expired was honorably discharged. He was a good citizen, well liked by his neighbors, and one of the many German farmers who assisted unmeasurably in the up-building of the beautiful farms which dot our country here and here. To such men as Leonard Widhelm our nation owes a great debt and when death takes them from the country which they have assisted so materially in making it is with much regret and sorrow. To those who have been stricken by this hard blow, the Leader joins with the entire community in extending heartfelt sympathy. 1872 Leonhard Wilhelm in the New York Passenger Lists Arrival Date ~ 28 May 1872 Birth Date ~ abt 1840 Age ~ 32 Gender ~ Male Ethnicity/ Nationality ~ Austrian Place of Origin ~ Austria Port of Departure ~ Bremen, Germany Destination ~ United States of America Port of Arrival ~ New York, New York Ship Name ~ Hannover Other Family Names ~ - Wife, Anna, Age 23 - Daughter, Johanna, Age 3 - Son, Rockus/Rochus, baby, 10 months - Mother-in-law (Anna's mother) - Maria Pfeiffer ~ Age 48 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/12259522/anna-m.-pfeifer - Sister-in-law (Anna's sister) - Maria Pfeiffer ~ Age 21 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/12259541/maria-mary-pfeifer - Sister-in-law (Anna's sister) - Agnes Pfeiffer ~ Age 15 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/34003778/mary-agnes-wilde 1880 Leonard Whitham [ Widhalm ] in the 1880 United States Federal Census as if JUNE 1, 1880 Enumerated Dates ~ 16, 17 Jun 1880 Home in 1880 ~ Granville Precinct, Platte County, Nebraska Race & Gender ~ White & Male Age ~ 42 Birth Year ~ abt 1838 Birthplace ~ Austria Marital Status ~ Married Parent's Birthplace ~ Austria Occupation ~ Farmer Widhalm Household Members ~ Leonard Whitham ~ Head Male Austria 42 Anna Whitham ~ Wife Female Austria 32 Johnna Whitham ~ Daughter Female Austria 12 Matilda [Cecilia] Whitham ~ Daughter Female Nebraska 7 Sophia Whitham ~ Daughter Female Nebraska 5 Michael Whitham ~ Son Male Nebraska 2 1885 Leon Wildhalm in the 1885 Nebraska State Census as of JUNE 1, 1885 Enumerated Date ~ 25 Jun 1885 Home in 1885 ~ Granville Precinct, Platte County, Nebraska Gender ~ Male Age ~ 49 Birth Year (Estimated) ~ 1836 Occupation ~ Farmer Widhalm Household Members ~ Wildhalm, Leon ~ Head Male Austria 49 Wildhalm, Anna ~ Wife Female Austria 39 Wildhalm, Johanna ~ Daughter Female Austria 17 Wildhalm, Sieelia [Cecilia] ~ Daughter Female Austria 13 Wildhalm, Saphra [Sophie] ~ Daughter Female Nebraska 11 Wildhalm, Mike ~ Son Male Nebraska 7 Wildhalm, John ~ Son Male Nebraska 4 1900 Leonard Withalen / Withalm [Widhalm] in the 1900 United States Federal Census as of JUNE 1, 1900 Enumerated Date ~ 23 Jun 1900 Home in 1900 ~ Slough Precinct, Pierce County, Nebraska Age ~ 64 Birth Date ~ Dec 1835 Birthplace ~ Germany Immigration Year Estimate ~ 1873 Marriage Year ~ 1866 Years Married ~ 34 Parent's Birthplace ~ Germany Occupation ~ Farming Widhalm Household Members ~ Withalen, Leonard ~ 64 Head Male Germany Dec 1835 / Farmer Withalen, Anna ~ 54 Wife Female Germany Jun 1845 / Mother to 7 Children w/ 5 Living Withalen, Mike ~ 22 Son Male Nebraska Dec 1877 Withalen, John ~ 19 Son Male Nebraska Sep 1880 Anna was mother to how many children ~ 7 Anna is mother to how many living children ~ 5 Note ~ This is most likely correct. The 1872 New York Passenger Lists has daughter, Johanna (age 3) and a son, Rochus, (age 10 months). If you click the spouse name of Anna {Pfeifer} Widhalm, please notice that Marge Galus Sandlier has this: "According to the WIDHALM biographies in the St. Francis Assisi (Humphrey, Nebraska) centennial book, Leonard and Anna were the parents of six children: Johanne (Johanna), Cecilia, Sophia, Maria, Michael and John Gerard." Therefore, the seven children in birth order were Johanna, Rochus, Cecilia, Sophia, Maria, Michael and John Gerard. It is possible that Rochus and Maria are buried at St. Mary's of Angels Catholic Cemetery with address of 261 Avenue, Humphrey, Nebraska 68642. The family belonged to that church until 1899. The church was established around 1875 and closed in the 1960's. Although Rochus may have died after arriving in the United States in travel to first Wisconsin and then to Platte County, Nebraska. Additionally our family records states that Maria was born on August 15, 1877 in Platte County, Nebraska with passing of August 23, 1877 in Platte County, Nebraska.
