Mr. James Oliver Chastain, 86, of Statesville, died April 21, 2014 at Mapleleaf Health Care Center. Born in Marshall, Texas on June 20, 1927, he was a son of the late Charles Lewis Chastain and Viola C. Fowler Chastain. He attended Marshall City Schools and entered the Army at Fort Bliss, Texas. He took training in Field Artillery and Anti-Aircraft at El Paso, Texas. He served in Italy in the Occupation Special Guard Unit for eighteen months. While there he ran and won the mile and half-mile race for his "C" Battery 88th Division. Upon retiring to the U. S. he joined the 82nd Airborne training in jump and glider at Ft. Benning, Ga. He was discharged from Ft Bragg, N.C. in December of 1948. He was a member of Western Ave. Baptist Church and the Lowry-Norris Sunday School Class and he enjoyed the Young At Heart Seniors Group while he was able to attend. He married the former Bette Burns in Charlotte on July 17, 1948. He worked for Fredrickson Motor Express having served for 33 1/2 years. He worked in several areas retiring from the sales department in 1984. Survivors in addition to his wife are a daughter and a son, three grandchildren, two great grand daughters, along with several nieces and a nephew of Texas. Graveside services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Spry officiating.
