Daughter of John and Katherine (Loskot) Nowak. Married to Alfred Abel Smith on March 24, 1886 in Seneca, KS. COURIER TRIBUNE, Seneca, Kansas, Monday, October 1, 1934. Page 4. MRS.ANNIE SMITH Mrs.Annie Nowak Smith, widow of the late Alfred A. Smith, passed away at her home north of Baileyville Thursday, September 27 at the age of 78 years. Her death was due to hardening of the arteries and complications. Mrs. Smith resided at her late home, the farm that her husband had homesteaded, since her marriage on March 24, 1886. She was the mother of six children, Miss Alice Smith of the home; Mrs. Mabel McCue, Moscow, Kansas; Walter and Frank Smith of Lantry, South Dakota; Clyde of the home and Mrs. Clara Kirk, who preceded her mother just a month, August 27th. She had also shown tender care and affection for three stepchildren, Mrs. Libbie Curts, died in 1927. Harry Smith lives in St. Louis and William Smith, is at the home at present. Her companion Alfred A. Smith died in 1912. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of John and Catherine Nowak, and was born at Maquoketa, Iowa, May 5, 1856. At an early age her family moved to Richmond, Mo. and later to St. Joseph, Mo. and came to Nemaha county when she was about 13 years old. They took a homestead in 1869 and moved their in 1971. The homestead is now in possession of a brother, Vendelin Nowak. Of the Nowak family five sisters and three brothers survive. Mrs. Sophia Baker lives in Newborg, Oregon; Mrs. Victoria Pike at Atwood, Kansas; Mrs. Lucy Aeschman at Sabetha; Mrs. Mary LeRoy, Steineauer, Neb.; Mrs. Celia DeFord, Lincoln, Neb.; Vendelin Nowak on the Nowak homestead; Max Nowak of Stratton, Colorado and Ludwick Nowak at Sugar Creek, Mo. John Nowak, Seneca and Frank Nowak, McLouth, died in recent years. There are 12 grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Presbyterian church. The funeral services were held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the M. E. church in Seneca. Rev. Harry R. Weed gave the sermon. Mrs. John M. Kongs and Miss Lois Hatch sang, "No Night There," "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Mrs. H. M. Baldwin accompanied on the organ. The pallbearers were Louis Ronnebaum, George Schmitz, Leonard Mauser, F. A. Skoch, Ben Buser and Louis Enneking. Burial was in the Seneca cemetery.
