Mrs Nancy Van Hook died in Davenport Sunday, Apr 10, 1904; from an attack of pneumonia. The deceased was born in KY Aug 4, 1834 and married George Van Hook, Nov 18, 1850. She moved with her husband and family to WA about a year ago and has resided in Davenport since. Dav Tribune" (Citizen: 4-22-1904) Nancy was the daughter of Catherine Windham and Stephen Langford; she was married to George VanHook. Although her headstone has her name as Nancy Lee VanHook, it was done in later years after her death. No middle name is given for Nancy on the available historical records, although the map of her place of burial has Nancy L VanHook. This L is likely for Langford, as women often use their maiden names for middle names. It is highly unlikely that she had the middle name of Lee, as it is likely that Lee began to be used as a middle name during the Civil War time (1861-1865), starting with boys being named Robert E Lee with their family surname last, and she was born about 25-30 years before that time. Lee (given name) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Lee: Gender Mainly Male (with some Female) Region of origin: United States Lee is a given name derived from the English surname Lee (which is ultimately from a placename derived from Old English leah "clearing; meadow"). As the surname of Robert E. Lee (1807–1870), the name became popular in the American South after the Civil War, its popularity peaking in 1900 at rank 39 as a masculine name, and in 1955 at rank 182 as a feminine name.
