Bio

Mary Jane Merritt Canter, daughter of Armstead Merritt and Elizabeth Watson, was born Feb. 11,1840 in Danville, Hendricks Co., Ind. She moved to Missouri when she was 8 years old and was married to Timothy W. Canter on Oct. 31, 1858 and moved to Kansas and to their present home 5 miles southeast of Horton in 1860. To them were born five children; one son and four daughters. She was converted and joined the Methodist church when she was 21 years old. Mrs. Canter had been in poor health for several years, but became seriously ill and died on March 26, 1904. She leaves her husband and four children to mourn her passing, James Canter, Mrs. John Reece, Mrs. Toby Vanschoiack and Mrs. Will Hardin. Her oldest daughter, Mrs. Emma Connor preceded her a little over two years ago.
