George W. Merritt was a Private, Company C, 35th Missouri Union Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted early in 1863 and remained in for the duration. He was with his unit for the most part and participated in many battles his unit was sent to, including Gettysburg. He was detached on special service,by order of a General Buford, to be a riverboat Guard on the Yazoo River at the Battle and Seige of Vicksburg, Mississippi in June 1864. While engaged with rebel forces on the banks of the Yazoo Pass, the ironclad gunboat he was on pushed aside many young saplings. One rebounded with great force and hit George in the face, breaking his jaw and knocking out several teeth, among other injuries. It was more than a week before he received any medical attention. His lack of immediate care resulted in lifelong problems for him.
