On August 8, 1924, in Slocum, Texas, a daughter was born to Howard and Florence Day Walters. Veda began school at age three going to school to her mother, father and brother. She continued her education at Slocum and Maydelle High School, graduating as salutatorian. Upon graduation at age fifteen, Veda began her higher education at Lon Morris College and graduating from Stephen F. Austin College. She was a member of Pine Burr Sorority which later became Chi Omega, Lumberjackettes, and Alpha Chi Honor Society. She loved flowers and at an early age her dad would drive through the countryside and let her pick wildflowers. Veda was a member of the Dogwood Garden Club for over thirty-four years. In 1948, Veda married the love of her life, Joe Moore. They spent many hours working in their yard and received a plaque for Yard of the Month. They both belonged to the Christian Church in Slocum and Palestine. She taught Sunday School classes and sang in the choir for over thirty years, often singing duets with her mother and Mrs. Jerry (Laura) Sadler. They moved to Palestine in 1951 where she taught school for twenty-six years at Alamo, Reagan, and Southside, previously having taught eleven years in Cherokee County and at Lone Pine in Anderson County. Veda loved her pupils and enjoyed seeing them become avid readers and becoming proficient in grammar and language skills. For two years, she held a workshop for Palestine elementary teachers to present her method of teaching grammar that she deemed as being successful. After retirement, she became a model for thirty or more years for Kay Lynn dress shop and the Coed dress shop. She enjoyed this phase of her life because she was happy to wear and display the latest styles at the Harvey Woman’s Club and other organizations. Being raised in a family of coaches, she became an avid sportsman watching and playing various sports. She belonged to several bridge clubs – Tuesday bridge, birthday bridge, Harvey Woman’s Club Bridge and her special Uno friends. Veda was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her parents, brother Ecta Walters and his wife Sid and their daughter Virginia Ann Hutto, in-laws Joe and Ora Moore, and sister in law Letha Martin.
