Bio

Richard J. O’Connor, 52, of 4205 W. Lancaster Ave., Milwaukee, died Saturday afternoon while visiting his mother-in-law, Mrs. William Schwartz, of 917 S. 14th St., Manitowoc. Private funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Klein & Stangel Inc. Funeral Home, Two Rivers and at 10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc, the Rev. Alfred Pritzl officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. O’Connor was born October 10, 1911 at Manitowoc, son of Benjamin and Catherine Scherer O’Connor. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, Manitowoc and in 1930 was graduated from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. He married the former Grace Schwartz August 10, 1935 at Chicago. The couple lived in Milwaukee for the past 20 years where Mr. O’Connor was employed by Square D Co. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Boniface Church. O’Connor was a protégé of the late Billy Schultz and began a career of comedy tumbling when Schultz organized a troupe of four youths and they practiced at the old Orpheum and when that building was razed, the training continued at the Vocational School where Schultz was custodian. After six years, O’Connor got his big break and joined the Bell Trio and performed under the big top with Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey combined shows. He was with the trio for more than four years. Survivors include his wife; three sisters, Mrs. Benjamin Bartelme and Mrs. John Bull of Manitowoc and Mrs. Gene Polinski of Chicago and two brothers, Francis and Robert O’Connor of Manitowoc.
