Bio

Jeraldine Ann Szymanski was born on January 28, 1944, in Sealy, Texas, to Julius and Lucille Zurek of Wallis, Texas. She attended Guardian Angel Catholic School through eighth grade and graduated from Wallis High School in 1962. In 1966, she married Joseph "Jodie" Anthony Szymanski of East Bernard, Texas, and began her married life in Wallis. After serving the community as a beautician for over 20 years, she completed her lifelong dream of earning a bachelor's degree as she graduated from the University of Houston-Victoria in 1990 and became a teacher. For 19 years, she touched the lives of many students at Deaf Smith Elementary School, in Richmond, Texas. Most notably, she was named the 2002 Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District. After retirement, she moved to Eagle Lake, Texas, and remained very active with her faith and family. As a proud descendent of Guardian Angel Catholic Church founders, Jeraldine served as Eucharistic Minister, lector, and parish council president, while being a member of the KJZT, Catholic Daughters of America, Ladies of Guardian Angel, and Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Most importantly, she unconditionally devoted her time and love to her family. Most weekends were spent visiting her sons and their families, babysitting her grandchildren; cooking; gardening; shopping; and the occasional casino trip with her sister, Cornelia. A diehard football fan, she routinely cheered for the Houston Texans, Texas Aggies, and LSU Tigers. She also loved to travel, having visited most of North America, Europe, and Spain. After a courageous battle with breast cancer, Jeraldine was called to the Lord on November 20, 2014. A beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, and sister-in-law, she is survived by her loving husband, Jodie Szymanski of Eagle Lake; son and daughter-in-law Jeffery and Sarah Szymanski of Houston, Texas; son and daughter-in-law Dr. Jonathon and Lisa Szymanski of Pineville, Louisiana; grandchildren Elizabeth and Willard Szymanski of Houston, Texas, and Ty and Bella Szymanski of Pineville, Louisiana; sister Cornelia Hinze of Sealy, Texas; and sister-in-law Gloria Demny and husband Don of East Bernard, Texas. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, relatives, and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, Julius and Lucille Zurek; in-laws, Joseph and Lillian Szymanski; and brother-in-law, Joe Hinze. Visitation will be at Guardian Angel Catholic Church, Sunday, November 23, 2014, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with Rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral services at Guardian Angel Catholic Church, 2610 Demel, Wallis 77485 on Monday, November 24, 2014, at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Thuy Quang Nguyen and Rev. Guerra celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. Interment will be in the Guardian Angel Cemetery. Pallbearers included Willard Szymanski, Don Demny, John Dujka, Kenneth Kovar, Pat King, and Carl Hanzelka. Honorary pallbearers included her extended family and loving friends. Memorials may be made in Jeraldine's memory to Parish of the Nativity Catholic Church in Eagle Lake, Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis, or Hospice El Campo.
