Father, Alois Louis Jupe Mother, Anna Marie Heine Jupe Sister Mary Elizabeth Jupe, age 98, a Sister of Divine Providence, entered eternal life on November 10, 2014. She was the second of Alois Louis and Anna Marie Heine Jupe's ten children. Sister Mary Elizabeth was born November 29, 1915 in Lott, Texas, was taught by the Sisters of Divine Providence the three years she attended St. Martin School in Tours, Texas. Later she attended St. Gerard School when her family moved to San Antonio, Texas. Her mother nourished her love for reading by supplying her with a variety of religious books and magazines. The life and story of St. Theresa the Little Flower greatly influenced her desire to serve God as a teaching Sister. With her parents' permission she entered the convent in August, 1931 and completed her high school studies in three years. She made her first profession on June 22, 1936 and was given the religious name Sister Mary Liberta. A few hours later, Sister Mary Liberta set out to begin her teaching ministry at St. Anne School in Houston, Texas. The Jupe family adage, "Life is what you make it" was ingrained in her. It always led her to pursue courses and earn certifications to remain updated. This included a tour of Europe "to experience different cultures and nationalities in preparation for teaching a course in the Cultural Aspects of Foods." Wherever she served, she took charge and quickly became a director, leader and innovator. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Counseling Certificate from Our Lady of the Lake University, a Master's in Nutrition from Texas Women's University, and was a Registered and Licensed Dietitian in Texas. After 15 years of teaching in the primary grades in Houston, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahome and a year at Moye Military School in Castroville, Texas, she joined the first faculty of the Congregation's new high school, Providence, in San Antonio, Texas where she taught Home Economics for eight years until 1959. She opened the new Home Economics Department in Lindsay High School and taught at the new Bishop Kelly High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As the Dean of Students at Our Lady of the Lake High School (1964-1966) she initiated an exercise program for the female boarding students and thus made a very positive impact in many girls' "body form, attitude and spirit." She taught Nutrition, Food and Child Development at Our Lady of the Lake University for 16 years. When the University closed the Home Economics Department she decided to use her expertise as a dietician to minister to rural nursing homes, small hospitals in the surrounding areas, as well as three nursing homes located in the poorer sections of San Antonio. The traveling and arduous schedule led Sister Mary Elizabeth, at 70+ years of age, to take a year off to renew and refresh. Her sabbatical at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington energized her to continue another 27 years of service and ministry. She organized a pharmacy in Kentucky, researched, wrote, and published a 960 page history of her hometown, Tours, Texas and the history St. Martin Parish in Tours for the Diocese of Austin. Then she organized Abraham's Tent in Lake Charles, Louisiana so that a hot, nutritional meal would be provided to the poor once a day. She also served her Congregation by organizing and updating the in-house convent store, volunteered regularly at Catholic Charities and at the annual Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner for the poor and elderly. She also tutored at St. Louis School in Castroville, Texas and Passmore Elementary along with a few other local schools. Even during this second half of her service she took on another great project. This one was personal and near and dear to her heart. She compiled her family's generational history which afforded her the blessing of reacquainting herself with her entire family and its new generations. This was one of the greatest blessings of her life. Her zest and passion for life, her natural tendency to reach out to those in need, her fervor to always excel and prepare for the future will remain a legacy for her many beloved family members, Sisters of Divine Providence, and the many generations of students whom she taught. She is survived by her sister, numerous nieces and nephews and all her other Sisters of Divine Providence. She was preceded in death by her parents Alois and Anna Marie (Heine) Jupe, brothers (and sisters-in laws) Louis (Marilyn), Alvin (Dorothy), William "Bill" (Tillie), Ernest, Arthur, Ray and Robert Jupe, sister and brother-in-law Ann and Ollie Brehm and brother-in-law Wilfred Theis. The Rosary is Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. and the Wake is at 7:00 p.m. in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center. A Mass of Resurrection will be Friday, November 14, 2014, 2:00 p.m. in Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center.
