James Frank Walls, Jr., April 1919 to March 2012. Born in Missouri Valley, Harrison County, IA to James Frank and Ivy Pearl Walls. Retired Major USAF, Jim was a Pearl Harbor survivor, Alaskan bush pilot, restaurateur, businessman, husband, father and mentor. Past owner and operator of the Woodshed, Smyrna County Club, Ports of Paradise and the Blue Hawaiian (Mahi Mahi). Jim's noted achievement has been the Omni Hut, a Polynesian restaurant that opened in 1960, and still operates today. "Created in a million miles of travel", the Omni Hut's success comes from Jim's development of authentic recipes and his genuine sense of hospitality. Survived by wife, Sally of 49 years; his elder sister, Trullis Richardson; six sons, one daughter, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, plus other family members and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings; wife, Doris L. Walls and son, James Frank Walls III. Jim possessed the gift of transforming "ordinary to extraordinary". The memories of Jim are a wonderful gift that continues to live in the hearts of all who knew "the Keeper of the Big Birds". A visitation/memorial for Major James Frank Walls, Jr., will be this Sunday, March 11th at the Omni Hut in Smyrna, TN from 1 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local food bank, as everyone loves to eat. Until we meet again, ALOHA. Published in The Daily News Journal on Mar. 8, 2012 (Thanks to Debbie McGinley for contributing the obit.)
