Bio

A full police honors funeral will be held Wednesday for former police Chief Homer L. Hunt, who guided this city's law enforcement effort for 18 years. Hunt died Sunday at age 61. Funeral services are scheduled at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lee Hirt and past master Don Sanders, of the Coachella Masonic Lodge 476, will officiate. Hunt, who started his law enforcement career as a patrolman in 1946 and retired 33 years later as chief, died at Desert Hospital, where he was hospitalized about 10 days ago for kidney and heart ailments. An exact cause of death was not immediately announced. Because of failing health, Hunt had quit his most recent job as director of security at Eldorado Country Club in Indian Wells, a post he held since his retirement from the Police Department in 1979. Hunt is survived by his wife Louise; two daughters, Patti Canales and Susan Siqueiros; his mother, Effie Edwards; a sister, Gladys McCormick; and nephews Jimmy and Roger Burge, all of Indio. “He will be missed by the department,” Capt. Carl Kennedy said this morning. “His greatest accomplishment was his devotion to law enforcement and to the community. He was totally dedicated to serving the community.” Pall bearers will include Chief Sam Cross, Capt. Carl Kennedy, Capt. Juan Montez, Lt. Warren Holcomb, and retired officers Capt. Darwin Oakley and Lt. Jack Evans. "There will be a police honor guard and a procession of law enforcement officers from the church,” Kennedy said. Flags at city buildings will be flown at half-staff Wednesday, according to Kennedy. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 o’clock tonight at Fitz Henry Funeral Home. Burial will be at Coachella Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Kidney Foundation.
