Mead was born on 18 Nov 1919 in Anderson, McDonald County, Missouri, and he died on 25 Nov 1977 in Stockton, San Joaquin County, CA. His birth parents were Benjamin Mead (1882-1958) and the former Lula Sherman (1884-1972). Norman grew up in rural southwest Missouri with four brothers and a sister; twin brother Noble, sister Nelia, and brothers WR, Jack and Oliver. Norman, having scarred lungs from pneumonia as a child was unable to pass a military physical though attempted enlisting in every branch of service at the onset of WWII. All four of his brothers successfully enlisted, served and returned home safely. Norman worked the family farm, then traveled to El Paso, Texas to work at an ammunitions plant, supporting the war effort. Norman married Naydean Hurst on 20 Jul 1942 in Columbus, Kansas. They moved to California where he later learned to roof houses and started a roofing business. He taught his brothers, Noble and Oliver, how to roof houses when they arrived in California, and all three brothers soon owned and operated their own roofing business. Norman and Noble taught their sons as well who ultimately went into the roofing business. Naydean settled in as mother, home maker and kept the books on the family business. They together had 5 children: Gary Norman Mead 1943-2007; Lonnie Dean Mead, Lynda Kay Mead, Douglas Alan Mead and Cynthia Lavaughn Mead.
