Bio

BAY CITY - Eleanor Josephine Bures Knebel, 95, passed away quietly September 21, 2014 at the Matagorda Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1919, in Midfield, TX to the late Joseph B. Bures and Theresa Brhlik Bures Krenek. After graduating from Blessing High School, she married George F. Knebel on August 30, 1938 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing, TX. They were married for 51 years until his death in January, 1990. Eleanor was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the K.J.Z.T., AARP, American Legion Post 649 Ladies Auxiliary, and the Phillip H. Parker VFW Post 2438 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Holy Cross Altar Society and along with Lillian Milberger organized the First Annual Turkey Dinner. Eleanor was a certified dental assistant and worked with Robert B. Kelly, DDS for 34 years until her retirement in 1991. Throughout her life, Eleanor enjoyed sewing, hand stitching, dancing, cooking and baking. She loved playing dominos, black jack, and traveling with her family and friends. She always took great pride in her appearance. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elsie Kana. Survivors include daughter, Margaret Hicks & husband Travis of Bay City, son George Knebel, Jr. & wife Irene of Hallettsville, TX; grandchildren Kristi Knebel Wolchansky & husband David, Kent Hicks and wife Becky, and Kimberly Hicks and great-grandchildren Taylor Allen, Samantha Hicks and Mason Hicks. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Dorothy Knebel Jenkins and Carmen Russo Knebel and brother-in-law Billie Jenkins and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Interment will follow mass at Roselawn Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Kent Hicks, Michael Kana, Mark Kana, Donny Knebel, Joe Jenkins. Larry Knebel, Arthur Lawrence and Arthur Milberger. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Pokluda, Ralph Pokluda, Robert Kelly, Gilbert Saha, Ronnie Knebel, Steve Cashion, David Wolchancky, Eddie Knebel, Jr., Jimmy Knebel, Kenny Kruppa and Fred Holub. Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, 979-245-4613.
