Leo Meister, 79, of David City, died at his home on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Leo was the former Sheriff of Butler County from 1962 to 1999. Leo F. Meister was born October 1, 1934 in Garrison, Nebraska to John and Freda (Daro) Meister. He attended school in David City and graduated from David City High School in 1952. Leo had worked at the Mead Ordnance Plant. He also was in the restaurant business with his brothers operating the "Greasy Spoon", "Meister's Cafe", and "Westside" in David City. On March 13, 1955, Leo was united in marriage to Janet Pflughaupt in Papillion, Nebraska. Four children were born to this union. Leo was elected Butler County Sheriff in 1962, an office he held for 36 years, retiring in 1999. Leo married Patricia Marie Coufal, November 16, 1991 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following his retirement, Leo worked at Henningson Foods in David City. Leo also loved to farm, raising sheep, cattle and hogs. He was a lifelong Garrison area resident. Leo was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, and the Nebraska Sheriff's Association. He is survived by his wife Pat of David City, sons J.D. (Nancy) Meister of David City, Jeff Meister of Hutchison, Kansas, daughters Dawn Meister of Lincoln, Paula (Barton J. "B.J.") Barcel of Bellwood. Stepsons Michael (Susie) Coufal and Robert Coufal both of David City. Brothers George (Brenda) Meister of Houston, Texas, Jerry(Mary Lou) Meister of Brainard, Michael (Jenni) Kindler of David City, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy Wilson,step-father Floyd Kindler and his first wife Janet in 1994.
