Evelyn Cecilia (Sladecek) Pekar, 87, passed away April 7, 2013 in Taylor. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Celebration of Life Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 12, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Evelyn was born in Granger on May 15, 1925 to Edward and Regina (Piela) Sladecek. She graduated from Catholic school in 1938 and from Granger High School in 1942. She attended North Texas Business College in Sherman, receiving her stenographic and accounting diploma in 1945. Evelyn went to work in Austin as a secretary for Motor Carrier Insurance and later for the Walter Tips Company. In April 1950, she married Frank Pekar in Granger. They lived in Houston for 30 years and raised two children. Evelyn was a housewife and considered being a mother her greatest role in life. She and Frank moved to Granger in December 1980 after Franks retirement from the U.S. Postal Service. Evelyn was a member of SSC&M Catholic Church, KJZT #18, KJT #28, NARFE #1410, SPJST No. 20 and St. Floras Altar Society. She held offices in the KJZT for over 20 years and was always involved in numerous activities of the organizations. She served as a Girl Scout Leader for over seven years. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, her brothers Victor, Otto and Edward Sladecek and her son-in-law John M. Hand Jr. Survivors are her daughter Cecilia Hand, of San Antonio; son Gregory Pekar and wife Nancy, of Belton; and seven grandchildren, John and Jennifer Hand, Sarah Hand, Michael Hand, Joshua and Aubrey Hand, Rebekah Hand, Jennifer and Rachel Pekar. She also has three great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Piper and Levi Hand. Memorials may be made to SSCM Catholic Church Window Restoration Project, P. O. Box 608, Granger, TX 76530 or SSCM Catholic School.
