Asher resident Doris Irene Franklin, 92, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at Unity North Medical Center in Shawnee. She was born October 6, 1915 in Wanette, Oklahoma. She was the second child of four children born to Marlin A. Pinson and Lula DeJarnette Pinson. Doris grew up on a farm south of Wanette where she learned how to work hard as a young girl picking cotton and husking corn. She graduated from Wanette High School and later attended East Central University in Ada. There she graduated with a bachelors of Science degree in Education. For seven years she taught elementary education before she met and married the love of her life. On June 5, 1947, she married Ellis Wayne Franklin, a young man from Wanette. In 1948 they bought a farm, one mile north of Asher where Ellis farmed and Doris worked as a mother and homemaker. Doris was a member of the Wanette Pentecostal Holiness Church for more than 60 years. She was the church secretary for nearly 40 years, taught Sunday School and was the church pianist for many years. Throughout her life, Doris was an avid gardener. She enjoyed canning and was a wonderful cook. Later in her life she enjoyed painting with acrylics and loved painting scenes on anything she could get her hands on. Doris had a beautiful handwriting and corresponded with relatives and friends, in-state and out, up to the time of her death. She will be remembered as a Godly woman who loved her church and her family and will be greatly missed by them. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ellis on December 11, 1999 and sister, Ola Statzer. {Published in the Shawnee News-Star Thursday, December 20, 2007}
