Published in the Ord Quiz, Ord, Nebraska Vernon VanSlyke, Arcadia Resident, 74 Vernon Jasper VanSlyke, 74, of Arcadia died July 8, 2000 at the Valley County Hospital in Ord. Services will be at the Ord Memorial Chapel on Thurs., July 13, at 2 pm with the Rev. Murry Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the Arcadia City Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Arcadia American Legion Post 251. Mr. VanSlyke was born at Ord, March 26, 1926 to Jasper and Carrie (Worm) VanSlyke. He was raised in the Ord area. After receiving his education he farmed. In 1948-49 he served in the United States Air Force. He and Rose Marie Cain were married Dec. 9, 1949 at Burwell. The couple lived and farmed north of Ord until March of 1965. They moved to Loup City where they farmed until March of 1975 when they moved to Arcadia. Mr. VanSlyke worked for Vernon Erikson, Melvin Swanson, Ord Alfalfa Mill and the City of Arcadia. Being semi-retired, he helped his son, Jack, farm and ranch. He was a member of the American Legion and the National Rifle Association. He loved football games and spending time with his children and grandchildren and looked forward to Sunday dinner and holidays. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, cooking and playing cards. He like to run farm equipment, especially the combine, and enjoyed checking the cattle in his old blue pickup. He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie, of the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City; three sons, Jack and his wife, Elaine, of Arcadia, Gene of Holdrege and Mike and his wife, Lyn, of Arcadia; three daughters, Diana (Mrs. Marvin) Brown of Rye, CO, Vonne (Mrs. Kyle) Gustafson of Bellevue, WA and Caryl VanSlyke of Arcadia; 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; four sisters, Mavis Sheets, Mabel Philbrick, Muriel Bartholomew and Mildred Philbrick; and one infant sister.
