Richard Nikkila Other children, including infant son, Michael (d. 1972) ------------------------------------------------- Published in the Ord Quiz, Ord, Nebraska, Thursday, November 1, 2007 Gene VanSlyke Hildreth, NE Resident, 54 Vernon Eugene Gene VanSlyke, 54, of Hildreth, NE formerly of Arcadia, NE, died Sat., Oct. 27, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE. Graveside services will be at 11 am on Friday at the Arcadia Cemetery with Rev. Janet Burgel officiating. Mr. VanSlyke was born Aug. 18, 1953 in Ord to Vernon J. and Rose Marie (Cain) VanSlyke. He grew up on a farm north of Ord and attended country school and Ord Public School. In 1965, the family moved to Loup City where he continued his education and graduated from Loup City High School in 1971. He then attended Central Community College in Hastings. He worked as a mechanic in the Hastings area and moved to Arizona in the 1980's where he worked as a truck driver. He later returned to south central Nebraska. The past 10 years he worked as a carpet layer for South Central Floor Company of Hildreth. Survivors include two sons, Eddie VanSlyke of Holdrege and Jimmy VanSlyke of Shelton; a son-in-law, Jeff Smith of Kearney; a special friends, Linda Baker of Republican City; a grandson, Kory Smith of Kearney; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Diana and Marvin Brown of Rye, CO, Vonne and Kyle Gustafson of Bellevue, WA and Caryl VanSlyke of Arcadia; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Jack and Elaine VanSlyke and Mike VanSlyke, all of Arcadia. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Smith, an infant son, Michael VanSlyke and his parents.
