Mesquite "Friend to Man" Laid to Rest E .P. (Uncle Ed) Paschall Special to The News. Mesquite, Texas, Sept. 18 – An early Texas resident, who lived his life after the ideal, of Elbert Hubbard, was buried Thursday. To hundreds who crossed the threshold of his home to find a warm Southern welcome, E. P. Paschall was known as Uncle Ed. Dead at the age of84, he had numbered among his friends many celebrities who paid floral tribute to his memory. It was said of Uncle Ed that no stranger was ever turned away from his door; that he was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need and that he realized an ideal;, to "live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." The late Mr. Paschall was born in Henry County, Tennessee, Dec. 18, 1842. He died last Wednesday. He enlisted in the Civil War with the Sixth Company of the Fifth Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers. In 1864 he married Miss Wilmouth Brisendine . They came to Texas in 1871, and Uncle Ed bought a tract of land four miles east of Mesquite. For fifty-five years Uncle Ed lived on his farm and strived to make the community a better place in which to live, friends said. He was a stanch Democrat and often entertained candidates for office. Nine children were born, seven of whom survive. They are J.P. Paschall, Royce City; A. L., E, V., Eddie and James Paschall and Mmes. W. H. Caldwell and R. E. Ellis all of Mesquite. There are twenty-seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Long Creek Church. Active pallbearers were his grandsons. He was buried at Long Creek Cemetery.
