Chester (Chet) Douglas Martin of Clarkston passed away peacefully at the Clarkston Care Center early Saturday morning, Sept. 25, 2010. Chet was the seventh son of 11 children born to James and Minnie Martin in Van Alstyne, Texas. Chet was born Oct. 24, 1925, and became an important part of the family farm. Chet enjoyed the Texas life until the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor, when the call to serve drew him into the U.S. Army Air Corps. While in the Air Corps he provided radio communications as part of the crew of a B-24 Bomber. The Air Corps brought him to the Pacific Northwest where he met the love of his life, Lela Birdsell, of Milton-Freewater, Ore., and they enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Chet worked vigorously in retail in Lewiston for decades, mainly for the JCPenney company. The nonworking hours were filled with guitar picking, singing, fishing, square dancing and enjoying his large groomed yard. He is survived by his wife Lela; five of his sisters and brothers; his sons, Kerry and Sherri Martin of Spokane, and James and Debbie Martin of Clarkston; a daughter, Susan and Mark Devine of Ashburn, Va.; his grandchildren include, Cris Shinkle-Warner and Doug Warner, and Merya and Justin Cannon, all of Spokane, Stayce and Sean McCabe, and Justin Martin and Jen, all of Clarkston, and Keri and Michael Devine of Ashburn; and great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Kyren, Ariyanna, Kaidyn, Wyatte and Sophie. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens, 3521 Seventh St., Lewiston, with a reception to follow on site.
