Velma G. Gipe, 91, Caldwell died Tuesday, May 6 at a Meridian assisted living facility of natural causes. Published in Idaho Statesman on May 8, 2014 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Velma Gipe, 91, of Caldwell, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at a Meridian care facility of natural causes. Graveside services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 12, at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Karcher Rd, Caldwell. Pastor Rob Belles will officiate. Following, a memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. at Caldwell First Christian Church, 3207 Ustick Rd, Caldwell. All services are under the direction of Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. Condolences may be shared at www.dakanfuneralchapel.com Velma was born September 26, 1922 in Berwyn, Nebraska to Daisy and William Mattox. She graduated from Nampa High School in 1942. She married Merlin Glenn Stredder on May 22, 1942. During Glenn's 20-plus years in the military, they enjoyed traveling to Japan, California, home to Nampa, Wyoming, and Washington, D.C. (where she shook hands with President Kennedy.) When Glenn retired from the Pentagon in 1967 they returned to Nampa. In 1970 they moved to the Riverside area of Caldwell, near Marsing. She was active in the First Christian Church, and was honored with a lifetime membership in the Boise Valley Chariot Racing Association. Glenn passed away in 1987. Velma married Dorel Gipe (of Caldwell) in 1991. They enjoyed RV'ing and traveling around the west for many years. Survivors include her husband, Dorel Gipe, Caldwell; three sisters, Luella LeMaster, Viola Martinez, and Linda Hall; a daughter, Cindy Mount, Meridian; a son, Monte Stredder, Seattle, WA; and three grandchildren in Boise. Velma was preceded in death by her first husband, Glenn Stredder; and three sisters, Eva Hardin, Aldene Pirnie, and Ardella James. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Christian Children's Ranch, 2421 W Duck Alley Rd, Eagle, ID 83616; or to a charity of your choice.
