Andrew Jackson McCurley (aka Jack) was born on February 27, 1875, in McCurley Prairie, Texas. His father, George Collins McCurley (born in Illinois), was 30. His mother, Permelia Ann White McCurley (born in Texas), was 26. The 1880 census says his father's father, George Washington McCurley was born in Tennessee, but other documents say he was born in Maury County, Tennessee. His father's mother, Elizabeth Buckmaster, was born in Maryland. His mother's father was William H. White and he was born in Georgia. His mother's mother was Catherine Dorca Sanders and was born in Alabama. In 1880 the family lived in Denton County Precinct 3, which includes the area that is now lower Lake Lewisville, which covered McCurley Prairie in the 1950s. Jack had three older siblings: Mary C.(13 in 1880), John J.(8 in 1880), and William (6 in 1880), and one younger brother, Robert L. (3 in 1880), on that census. His mother's brother, John R. White also lived with the family. The 1900 census shows that his parents lived alone. It also showed Jack living with his cousin, Elisha Robb, on McCurley Prairie in Denton County, Texas. When Jack was 24 years old (1900) he lived with family members in Denton County, the Robb family. He was a cousin to the head of the household, Elisha Robb. His father remarried in 1903 to Sarah Anne McCurley. The 1910 (age 35) census shows he was living with his brother William McCurley in Haskell County, Texas. Haskell County is several counties west of Tarrant County. In 1913, when he was 38 years old, he married Maude Ann Crites, 24 years old, on November 21, 1913, in Ardmore, OK. A 1916 directory showed him living at 2816 Refugio Ave., in Fort Worth, Texas, and working in the Armour Meat Plant there. In 1917 he registered for the draft and the record shows he lived in Lewisville, TX, then. In 1920, the census shows him living with Maude and four of their children (Fred, George, Homer, Etta) in Denton County, TX, which was probably the community called "McCurley Prairie." Andrew Jackson and Maude had 14 children in 21 years. Four children died in infancy. Ten of his children lived and had their own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his retirement, he moved to Carollton, Texas, with his wife Maude. They moved to Lewisville, Texas, to a Cowan Ave. address where at some point his brother Robert Lee McCurley had lived with them. As a child, I (Synthia LaFontaine) saw him and my grandmother, Maude, living in a home in Carrollton and then later living in a home in Lewisville. At 96 years old he did not have any gray hair. At 96 years old he dug and built his own storm cellar, a large underground room, as well as maintained a large vegetable garden on the property. He enjoyed watching wrestling, chewing tobacco, and drinking Coca-Cola. He was brilliant and very conversant even after being over 100 years old. He died on May 11, 1980, in Lewisville, Texas, at the age of 105, and was buried there. The McCurley Cemetery, where he and many members of his family are buried, is a state historical landmark with this inscription: "McCurley Cemetery: The McCurley family of Illinois settled in Denton County in 1859. George Collins McCurley set aside land for a burial ground, church and school. A traveling stranger may have been the first burial, but George's brother, Abraham, who died in 1871 was the first family member buried at the site. The first marked graves date from 1877 when the plot began to be used by neighbors. In 1951 the 106 graves which then comprised the cemetery had to be relocated because of the construction of Lewisville Lake. They were moved here, adjoining Old Hall cemetery, burial place of George C. McCurley. http://www.twu.edu/downloads/history-government/Matthews_Revised_Ibid_Essay_16.pdfhttp://www.cemeteries-of-tx.com/etx/denton/cemetery/McCurley.htm Contributor: Synthia LaFontaine
