From El Reno Tribune Online 04/18/2014 Helen Hrdy Halacka Our loving Mother, Helen, left us for a "new beginning" on Monday, April 14, 2014, surrounded by her three children and five of her grandchildren. She lived a full life, filled with unconditional love for her family. Helen was born Aug. 17, 1916, to Frank and Anna Hlavaty Hrdy in Chicago, Ill. She and her family moved to Lovell, Okla., when she was 2 years old – her first train ride. In 1932, the Hrdy family moved, by horse and wagon, from Lovell to El Reno. Helen graduated from El Reno High School in 1935, then moved to Chicago where she met her husband, William (Bill). Bill and Helen were married Dec. 9, 1939. To this union was born three children – Ruth Ann, William Jerry (Bill) and Helene Marie. She worked for Hall Printing Company in Chicago for 33 1/3 cents an hour and for the Canadian County Election Board for 25 years. Helen was a loving wife and mother, friend to many, homemaker, caregiver to her father for 35 years, masterful gardener, quilt maker, has been making scrapbooks of her life events since she was in elementary school, hostess for yearly family dinners, and master chef of the Czech cuisine. Helen appreciated her family cooking for her in her later years. She kept in touch with family in Europe as well as in America, by writing letters and remembering birthdays. She experienced the Dust Bowl, the Depression, World War I, II and Korean Wars and Vietnam Conflict. She watched the Zeppelin when it flew over in the late 1920s. She loved Lawrence Welk, Johnny Cash and gospel music and always watched the news to keep up with current events. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; and brothers, Jerry and Milos Hrdy. Surviving her is her brother, Frank Hrdy Jr.; her children, Ruth Ann Ball, William (Bill) Halacka and wife, Pauline, and Helene and husband, Mike Higgins; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, Adam Halacka and wife, Kristine; David Ball and wife, Jennifer, and children, Casady, Caitlin and Caden; Douglas Wilkes Ball and wife, Katherine,and children, Hannah, Grace and Sophia; Gregory Halacka, Kendall Mesker and Jaxon; Elizabeth Ross and husband, Braden, and children, Hayden, Ella and Eli; Jarrod Halacka and wife, Dawndie, and children, Jakub, Joshua, Staci and Michael; Timothy Higgins; Alison Higgins; Michael Yuds and wife, Monica and Aiden; Amber Ward and Lukas. Also surviving her are many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorials may be made to OETA Foundation, 7403 N. Kelly Avenue, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73111, or Mercy Hospital Hospice, 4401 W. Memorial Road, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73134. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the El Reno Cemetery Pavilion. Services were under direction of Wilson Funeral Home.
