Tommy Chasak, 84, died Tuesday in Durham. A native of Corpus Christi, Mr. Chasak was a proud Texan through and through, earning him the nickname of "Tex." He enlisted at age 18 in the Army during WWII, and served overseas in the field artillery on tours of duty in Italy and North Africa. His military jobs were as cook and messenger. Following the war, Tommy married Gladys, his wife of 60 years. They lived in Texas briefly before coming to Durham. Mr. Chasak worked for 36 years with Liggett-Myers Tobacco Co. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for over 50 years. Tommy's large extended family, to whom he was devoted, was his top priority. He will be remembered for his humility, gentleness and sense of decency. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Rorie Chasak; his children, Larry "Mackie" Chasak and wife, Sandra, of Raleigh, Erwin T. "Tommy" Chasak Jr. and wife, Joyce, of Raleigh, and Linda Chasak-Wright and husband, Larry, of Golden, CO; a sister, Josie Perkins, of Clovis, NM; grandchildren, Chris, Jeremy and Cassie Chasak; step-grandchildren, Brian, Lindsay and Whitney Wright; and great grandchildren, Patrick and Anna Wright.
