Bio

Springfield Republican Springfield, Massachusetts Published September 8, 1860 One of those bloody affrays peculiar to the Southwest occurred at Okalona (Okolona), Miss., somedays ago. Thomas Williams quarreled with Jack Roberts, and the latter drew a pistol on Williams but Wash. Dandridge pushed Roberts' hand aside and the ball only grazed Williams' ear. Another bystander, John Charles, indignant at Dandridge's interference with the sport, lodged the contents of a shot gun in Dandridge's breast and killed him. The next day Williams went to shoot Roberts but by mistake killed his brother. At last date others of the family were in hot pursuit of Williams. When he is finished there will be peace in Okalona for a while. George Washington Dandridge was my 3rd g-grandfather. Buried in either Lee or Pontotoc County, MS. The following was submitted by Find A Grave contributor Spotsgenie: "George Washington Dandridge was a prominent land owner in Lee County, MS. he was killed in an "affray" in Tupelo, MS. in 1860" the above was taken from a Pontotoc County, MS. family history book. Notes for Elizabeth A. Norwood: "After the death of George Washington Dandridge, Eliza's brother William Norwood, became the guardian of their four children." The above was taken from a History of Pontotoc County Families written by the daughter of Allie Creely Armstrong. Allie Creely Armstrong was the great-granddaughter of Mildred Ann nee-Dandridge Creely a sister to George Washington Dandridge.
