Bio

Leonard J. Svoboda, 89, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at his home in Columbus. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 11, at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Rev, Del Lape officiating. Interment will be at the All Saints Catholic Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a 7PM Vigil Service at Gass Haney Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Friday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to donor's/family choice. Leonard J. Svoboda was born on May 28, 1924, in Butler County, Nebraska, to Raymond P. and Antonia (Hofbauer) Svoboda. He attended Dist. No. 37 in rural Butler County, Holy Trinity Catholic School in Brainard, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army just after World War II from March 1946 to April 1947 while serving in Augusta, Georgia, as a medic at Oliver General Hospital. Leonard married Nadine M. Zavodny on June 30, 1948, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Lincoln. He was a past operator of the Butler County road grader while living in Brainard, Nebraska. He and his family moved to Columbus in January 1958 where Leonard worked at Becton Dickinson Medical Supply, part time at the G.T.E. phone company, and later he worked as the lead Mechanical Engineer at the Columbus Post Office for 22 years. Leonard retired from the Post Office in January 1985. Leonard was a member of St. Anthony Church where in the past he helped with Bingo and their annual festival. Leonard was an avid gardener, and lawn man. He enjoyed working in his workshop on small engines and lawnmowers or something else mechanical. Leonard and his wife loved Czech music and enjoyed going to Polka dances around the state. Leonard could fix anything and enjoyed helping family, friends and neighbors with anything that was broken. You could always count on Leonard to be there if you needed help.
