Bio

Samuel Fletcher DeFord (1836-1922) Ottawa, Putnam County Ohio is steeped in the history of the DeFord Building. The S.F. DeFord Building ("DeFord Building") was built towards the end of the 19th Century by Samuel F. DeFord. "S.F." graduated from the scientific and classical departments of Mt. Union College before pursuing a Master of Arts degree from the same university in 1861. He dedicated his life to education holding positions as Superintendent in St. Mary and Celina, Ohio. In 1871, he became Superintendent of the Ottawa Union School prompting his move to Putnam County. Under his years as Superintendent, the school system came to be considered most favorably with any other in the state. He worked to raise the grade of the schools and the qualifications for the teachers throughout Putnam County.
