Mary Vashti (Duncan) DeFord (1837-1925) Daughter of Thomas Duncan (1805-1883) and Susan Leach 1809-1881. Married Samuel Fletcher "S.F." DeFord (1836-1922) on 05 Nov 1859 at Trumbull County, Ohio. Children: 1. Clara Duncan DeFord, 1861-1864 2. Matilda Elizabeth "Lizzie" (DeFord) Stevens, 1867-1959 3. John Thomas DeFord, 1874-1954 4. Susan Fletcher (DeFord) Hunter, 1881-1971 Mary DeFord was instrumental in forming the Ladies Centennial Book Club in Ottawa, Ohio. Literary clubs were almost non-existent at the turn of the 20th century, with only one in the whole state of Ohio. Mary and a group of interested ladies met to organize a book study group on February 22, 1856. As the first President she led discussions on various topics including the elimination of polygamy. A strong supporter of women's rights, Mary presented a program — open to men and husbands — on the subject of suffrage with "vigor and feeling". The Club also petitioned the Mayor of the Ottawa for cleaner sidewalks. Mary and her husband were prominent in education, religious and civic affairs. A building on the corner of Main and Hickory streets in Ottawa bears the DeFord name. Source: Putnam County District Library
