JB Hughes, born in Caddo, Texas in 1920, one of six children of Frank and Pearl Hughes, departed for Heaven on March 13, 2014 at the age of 94. He was a wonderful husband and father, teaching his children the value of honesty, respect, and hard work. Having lost his wife Maxine 10 years ago, he spent his remaining years, gardening, reading and of course watching his favorite old western movies on TV. JB was his given name, and no one seems to know why. He joined the Navy in 1941, and once when asked his full name, one of his shipmates said: 'Chief, he's from Texas; they don't name 'em down there, they just brand 'em.' JB grew up in Freer, Texas along with 2 brothers who all enjoyed dove, quail, and deer hunting. At 6'2' JB was a high school basketball star in 1937 which earned him the nick name 'Speedy'. He operated the local soda fountain in his teens and often spoke of driving his brothers over to the big town of San Diego to attend the Saturday night dances. He said the old dirt road was terrible and they always had to ask the mailman if it was passable after a rain. During WW2, JB was a Pharmacist's Mate, training at the newly built Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. Upon completing training, he was assigned to the USS Leonard Wood, and soon became very popular with the cooks on board his ship. JB was fond of pumpkin pies and the ship's cooks enjoyed a drink now and then, so an arrangement was soon made to trade a gallon of the grain alcohol used for sterilizing surgical instruments for a pie once a month. His stories of his adventures in the South Pacific and North Africa were of legend and he loved recalling them to anyone who would listen. He was able to visit Hawaii again with his family in the early 1980's and enjoyed showing everyone around the places he had been 40 years earlier. JB managed one of the first grocery stores in Freer in 1952, but working 18 hours a day with a wife and new baby proved at bit much, so when another opportunity came along, he gladly accepted a job with Humble Oil & Refining Company which later became Exxon. He retired in 1985 after a 33 year career. JB lived life to the fullest and passed away in his sleep, just the way he would have wanted. He always expressed his gratitude to God of being blessed with a wonderful, exciting, long life and the love he received from his family. JB is survived by his son Roger Hughes (Debby), daughter Susan Feenaghty (Sean), brother Frankie Hughes of Harlingen, his sister Joanne Day of Houston, and the 'smartest little granddaughter' Amy Peal. JB was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Maxine, sisters Judy Hoelscher and June Mosley, brother Warren (Iggy) Hughes, and his beloved little fur kids, Tony, Boy-Boy, Sparky, Batman, Angel May, and Shelby. We rejoice in knowing that they are all together once again in God's glorious Kingdom, Maxine is cooking up a wonderful supper, JB and Warren are getting reading to go out dove hunting in the morning and everyone is talking and laughing just like the old days. As JB would say, 'That'll be fine'. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday March 18, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors Chapel. Interment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
