Bio

Gilbert H. ‘Gil' Sautter, 83, of Grand Island died Monday, March 03, 2014 at Wedgewood Care Center. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Gollaher Chapel with Dr. Theresa Mason officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by United States Army and the Grand Island Veterans' Honor Guard. All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Gilbert was born August 23, 1930 at Horace, NE, to Elmer and Elsie (Meyer) Sautter. The family eventually settled on a farm near Scotia. Gilbert graduated from Scotia High School in 1948. He entered the United States Army on February 29, 1952, serving during the Korean War and was honorably discharged February 19, 1954. Gilbert and Faith Peterson were united in marriage on November 1, 1952 in Scotia. Upon Gilbert's discharge from service, the couple farmed near Scotia for 12 years, moving to Grand Island in 1966. Gilbert began working when the Sperry New Holland plant opened in 1965, retiring 25 years later in 1990. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, collecting airplanes, banks and farm toys. He was an avid Husker fan. Gilbert worked hard his entire life, passing on to his children his work ethic, the importance of a good education and love of family. Survivors include his devoted wife of 61 years, Faith; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Terri Sautter of Grand Island; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Kevin Kirkland of Fallon, NV; and sisters and brother-in-law, Lucille Hermsmeyer of Greeley, NE and Lauradel and Duane Carson of Ord. Those also left to cherish his memory include five grandchildren, Tara, Kory and Kylie Kirkland and Darrick (Amy) Sautter and Daniell (Daniel) Garlick; and two great-granddaughters, Avery Kirkland and Susannah Garlick. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Charles and Robert; and two brothers, Dean Sautter and Kenneth Sautter.
