Born in Iowa. Married Betty sometime in 1877. Although Sam Ross was an early settler in the Liberty Grove area, his house and part of his farm set in Rockwall County. Sam had been a trail driver before meeting Miss Betty Bright. It was after the Civil War that Sam hired on as a driver collecting $3 for each head that made it thru Indian territory and on to the railhead at Kansas. He had already made several trips down the Chisholm Trail when he met Betty who had traveled to Van Alstyne with her family at an early age. Sam and Betty's house was situated in an ideal location. There was plenty of good farmland with pasture on one side, endless acres of timber on the other side and one of the best springs in the whole county. That spring not only had the best water, but it also kept the milk and butter cool all summer long. You could always find arrowheads around that spring. No doubt that the Indians had camped there. Samuel Ross died at Liberty Grove from a heat stroke on March 19, 1907. He is buried at Cottonwood Cemetery. Pony Express Rider April 15, 1854 - March 19, 1907.
