Bio

************************************************************************************* Garrett Neal Bryant I was born about 1801 or 1805 in North Carolina. He is called Garrett Neal Bryant I because his son, Lawson Bryant (1834-abt 1891/1900), had a son he named Garrett Neal Bryant (1860-1932), after his paternal grandfather. Thus, two Garrett Neal Bryants. Two US Censuses show Garrett as born in 1801 (1870 & 1880) while two censuses show 1805 (1850 & 1860). His parents are currently unknown but the 1880 US Census shows his father as having been born in North Carolina and his mother in Virginia. About 1825, Garrett married Sarah "Sally" Stanton (1808- bet 1870/80). Born in North Carolina, her parents are currently unknown. Garret and Sally married in North Carolina but by the late 1820s they had migrated to Greene Co., TN. By 1840, possibly as early as 1834, they had migrated to Claiborne Co., TN. The censuses for 1850, 1860 and 1870 all show Garrett, Sally and their children living in Claiborne County. Garrett and Sally were married for at least 45 years and had nine known children. In order of their birth they were Mary Bryant (1826-1865), Rebecca Elizabeth Bryant (1830-1895), Bixy Bryant (1832- ?), Lawson Bryant (1834-aft 1880), Matilda Hale "Tildy" Bryant (1837-1891), Octavia L. Bryant (1840-1886), Sonville Powell Bryant (1843-1915), James Bryant (1846- ?) and Orlena Bryant (1849- ?). Their first child, Mary, was born in North Carolina. The rest were born in Tennessee. The 1880 US Census shows Garrett, age 79, as "divorced" with two of his daughters, Octavia (25) and Orlena (21), living with him in Claiborne Co, TN. It is possible that his wife, Sally, had died & that Garret was divorced from a currently unknown second wife. Garrett does not appear in the 1900 census but he does appear as an eligible voter in Claiborne County in 1891. He is thought to have died about 1892 in Claiborne County and buried there in the Scott Cemetery. His grave site is one of several early burials that are now unmarked in that cemetery. The earliest burial site with a readable marker is 1884. ************************************************************************************** ************************************************************************************** ************************************************************************************** The information contained in this memorial for Garret Neal Bryant I, his wife, family members, ancestors and descendants is thought to be correct.
