Bio

************************************************************************************* Lawson Bryant was born about 1834 in Claiborne Co., Tennessee. He was the son of Garrett Neal Bryant I (1801-abt 1890) and Sarah "Sally" Stanton (1808-bet 1870/80), both buried in what is now called the the Scott Cemetery near Harrogate, Claiborne Co., TN. Lawson's parents were both born in North Carolina where they married about 1825. In the late 1820s they migrated to Greene Co., TN. By 1840, they were living in Claiborne Co., TN and appear in the 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 US Censuses. Lawson married Eliza Jane "Liza" Fortner (abt 1833-1884?) on Jan. 14, 1853. Born near Goin, Claiborne Co., TN, she was the daughter of Jonathon Fortner (1795-1870) and Margaret "Peggy" Falls (1897-1902). Liza's father, Jonathon, was born in North Carolina, her mother, Peggy, in the soon (1796) to be created state of Tennessee. Lawson and Liza were married for at least 27 years and had nine known children. In order of their birth they were Sarah Jane Bryant (1854-1943), Matilda Bryant (1857-bet 186070?), Garrett Neal Bryant II (1860-1932), James Franklin Bryant (1861-1923), David Clarence "Dave" Bryant (1869-1926), George Washington Bryant (1867-1944), William Paul Bryant (1870-1957), John Marshall Bryant (1873-1949) and Lewis Dudley "Dud" Bryant (1875-1952). Lawson and his wife, Liza, last appear in a US Census in 1880 living in Claiborne Co., TN. In that census they were 46 and 43 years of age respectively and had seven children (ages 4-17) living with them. Since the youngest children all lived in Claiborne County as young adults, it is probable that their parents lived out their lives in that county. A Claiborne County voter record shows Lawson living in Claiborne County in 1891. Liza died in Goin (Claiborne Co., TN) between 1880-1900, possibly 1884 when she would have been about 51. She is buried in one of the several early burials sites in the Scott Cemetery in Harrogate, Claiborne Co., TN that are no longer marked. Lawson is thought to have died between 1891-1900 as he does not appear in a census after 1891. He too, is buried in the Scott Cemetery in a grave that is now unmarked. The earliest burial with a readable stone is 1884. Three of Lawson and Liza's sons (James, Garret and David) are also buried in this cemetery. ************************************************************************************* ************************************************************************************* ************************************************************************************* The information contained in this memorial for Lawson Bryant, his wife, family members, ancestors and descendants is thought to be correct.
