Bio

Brother of MRS John Milledge Richard West Habersham, son of Richard Wylly Habersham and grandson of James Habersham Jr., was a portrait artist. He was born in 1812 in Beaufort, South Carolina and painted in both Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. He married Martha Jenkins Matthews; together they had eight children. Habersham wrote “The Honor of Jehossee” in 1853, edited a monthly periodical, "The Self Instructor," and wrote many articles for Savannah newspapers under his initials "R.W.H." He owned the plantation Walnut Hill on Port Royal Island in Beaufort and was a member of St. Helena's Episcopal Church. He donated many of his portraits to the Georgia Historical Society in the 1880s. Richard Habersham died in 1889. From the description of Richard West Habersham letter, 1869.
