[Morning Oregonian 01 11 1899 pg 8] REV. B. E. HABERSHAM DEAD Well-Known Episcopal Clergyman Passes Away at His Home _______ Rev.Barnard Elliott Habersham, for the past 16 years rector of St. Matthew's Episcopal church, died suddently at 7 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 200 Caruthers street. He was 84 years of age, last September, and although he had been visibly failing for the past six months, he kep up his work with unflagging energy, conducting services regularly, and making his round of call on the sick and afflicted of his flock. He had been in his usual health of late, and on Saturday came down town in the storm to call on the board of charities in the interest of a needy family in his parish. He preached Sunday evening as usual, and seemed to be in his usual health when he retired that evening. Yesterday morning when he was getting up he was seized with a pain the chest, and called his daughter. A physician was summoned as speedily as possible, but he was unable to render any aid. Mr. Habersham told the physician when he arrived that he was dying, and in a very short time breathed his last. It is supposed that he had taken cold, which brought on congestion of the lungs, which, in his feeble condition, speedily proved fatal. Mr. Habersham was born September 20, 1814, at Beaufort, S. C. He came of old Revolutionary stock. His father, Richard W. Habersham, was a member of congress and United States attorney, and his mother was the daughter of Colonel Barnard Elliott, of the Continental Army. Early in life he became an Episcopal clergyman, and was rector of various churches throughout Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia. He came to Oregon about 18 years ago, and had charge of churches at Corvallis and McMinnville for the first two years, afterward coming to Portland, where he had since resided. He was earnest and untiring in the discharge of his duties, and his kindly face and venerable form were familiar to all in his parish, both old and young, and his gentle, kindly and unselfish nature made him universally loved and respected. Two children survive him--Robert A. Habersham, United States surveyor-general for Oregon, and Miss Eliza A. Habersham, teacher at the Fulton school. His wife died some nine years since. The funeral services will be held from St. Matthew's chapel, First and Caruthers streets, Wednesday at 2 P.M. Parents: Richard Wylly Habersham and Sarah Hazzard Elliott
