Melvin D. "Doc" Bahensky, 94, of Grand Island died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007 at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul. "Doc" was born on July 18, 1912 at Palmer to Steven and Ruby (Kutch) Bahensky. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene D. Bahensky on Aug. 17, 2006. Survivors of the immediate family include a daughter, Jan Gustafson of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Jeanette Bahensky of Palmer; and a sister, Edna Zuehlke of St. Paul. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Vanice Bahensky of St. Paul; five grandchildren, Jeff and Sharon Reiss of Louisville, Joni and Stu Schlatz of Trumbull, Jill and Bob Greensides of Colorado Springs, Russ Bahensky of Chanhassen, Minn., and Joel and Renee Bahensky of Westminster, Colo.; and 13 great-grandchildren. He grew up in the Gage Valley area and attended Gage Valley rural school and was a 1930 graduate of St. Paul High School. In 1934 he went to Guelph, Ontario, Canada to attend Veterinary School, graduating in 1938. After graduation, he moved to West Virginia, where he worked for a small animal practice for a short time. He was united in marriage to Irene D. Dammann on Aug. 29, 1937 at Worms. The couple lived at Worms for a short time and then moved to a farm in Gage Valley in 1944, where he practiced veterinary medicine. In 1949 he bought an airplane that he used in his vet practice. In later years he went into practice with Dean Bader, DVM, for a short time. In 1971 he began employment as a government meat inspector, which he did until his retirement. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of St. Paul; the American Veterinarian Medical Association and the Nebraska Veterinarian Association. He enjoyed deer hunting in Colorado for many years and fishing in Canada. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, LeRoy and Lyle Bahensky.
