His father-in-law also ran large herds of cattle there, being gone several days at a time, checking on or rounding up his cattle. Sheldon ranched there until 1942, when he sold a part of his cattle and drove the others over the mountains to land he had leased east of Presidio, Texas. Sheldon saw some exciting times on the border, and caught many large catfish from the Rio Grande. One large fish nearly drowned him one time, when he couldn't pull the fish out, he jumped into the river and ran his arm through the fish's gills. The fish went to the bottom several times before he could get his arm loose from the fish.
